Sackhoff and Van Der Beek redefine awesome in graphic ‘Power Rangers’ Fan Film

Before we get the official reboot next year, it seems that Joseph Kahn (director of ‘Torque’ and ‘Detention’) decided to introduce a new, graphic vision of everyone’s 90’s childhoods with his fan film Power/Rangers.

By ‘Fan Film’ I mean ‘incredible, fully realised short movie with Big Budget effects and A-list Stars (Katee Sackhoff and James Van Der Beek), and by ‘graphic’ I mean gore, nudity, violence and an instant NSFW tag. This ain’t your average Morphin’ Time.

As Kahn says “I think the trick that I really wanted to do with this was to make that dark and gritty version that everybody keeps talking about, but really do it. Really see if I could totally accomplish it with essentially a really incredible incredibly silly property.”

He’s in no way a fan of the franchise (the opposite in fact); rather this is a commentary on the ridiculous nature of ‘gritty reboots’ and the seriousness of films that are essentially modernised versions of toy adverts.

He adds “the dark and gritty reboot thing is such a cliché that the intention was not only to make it dark and gritty but make it even darker and grittier than you could possibly imagine, hence the brains, the blood and the violence and the sex.”

Regardless of his intentions, the final product is fantastic, over the top and extremely fun. Check it out below, and check out the full piece over on
