Regardless of how good the comics are this week TAKE A LOOK AT THESE COVERS! Some of the best covers I’ve seen in a while this week, check them out!
Pick of The Week
Jade Street Protection Services #1
Black Mask Comics: June 29, 2016 Writer: Katy Rex Art: Fabian Lelay Cover: Annie Wu
Awesome Cover the first! How great does this book look? Black Mask are releasing some fantastic series of late (see further down on this list for more), and this looks to be no exception.
In this new series that mashes The Breakfast Club with Sailor Moon, Kai, Saba, Noemi, Divya, and Emma are (bad) students at Matsdotter Academy, an elite private school for magical girls. When they all meet for the first time in a totally unfair detention, these punk rock witch delinquents cut class and discover the fates Matsdotter has in store for them are even more sinister than they suspected. With JSPS, the creative team of writer Katy Rex, penciler/inker Fabian Lelay, colorist Mara Jayne Carpenter, and series cover artists Annie Wu and Kiki Jenkins channel Black Mask’s edgy, subversive sensibility into a whipsmart adventure for delinquents young and old.
Breakfast Club meets Sailor Moon! Brilliant.
Dark Horse: June 29, 2016 Writer: Van Jensen Art: Pete Woods Cover: Pete Woods
The solicit for this is (fittingly) rather cryptic, with talk of Nine Families observing and controlling society from the shadows. The cover has Little Grey Men on it so aliens are involved somehow. Without reading up on any previews or anything that’s all I know, so I’ll check it out (I loves me number 1’s, I does!).
Rest of the Best
4 Kids Walk Into A Bank #2
Black Mask Comics: May 25, 2016 Writer: Matthew Rosenberg Art: Tyler Boss Cover: Tyler Boss
Awesome Cover the Second! The first issue of this was a breakout success for Black Mask, with a runaways vibe via an old school heist movie, 4 Kids is back with issue 2. You may have a hard time tracking down a physical copy of issue 1 but I definitely advise picking it up digitally and taking the plunge into this series!
All New All Different Avengers #11
Marvel: June 29, 2016 Writer: Mark Waid Art: Mahmud A. Asrar Cover: Alex Ross
Awesome Cover the Third! Seriously, Alex Ross is a master, and I feel like we’re getting especially spoiled at the moment with his covers to ANAD Avengers. This one looks to be my favorite, with Annihilus (the spoiler at the end of last issue…soz) commanding his prisoners – The Avengers! OMG. I’m enjoying this book. It’s not breaking the internet or anything but Mark Waid writes some solid characterisation, especially of the younger cast members, and Mahmud Asrar’s art is always a treat.
Black Panther #3
Marvel: June 15, 2016 Writer: Ta-Nehisi Coates Art: Brian Stelfreeze Cover: Brian Stelfreeze
A little late but looking great, Ta Nehisi Coates and Brian Stelfreeze art setting a new level of quality for Black Panther, and the whole of Wakanda in fact, as this is more of an ensemble piece than ever before. Deep political intrigue is only just beginning, and I really hope they give this book the room and time to develop as much as they want. A must read.
Captain America Steve Rogers #2
Marvel: June 29, 2016 Writer: Nick Spencer Art: Jesus Saiz Cover: Jesus Saiz
Oof. A must read but for completely different reasons. Finally we get to see what happened next following on from THAT final page. I was a little too quick to dismiss the controversy on this one, and for that I stand corrected. While no, it didn’t affect me to anywhere near the degree it did others, I can totally see why it would offend. Not enough for people to send death threats (nothing is obviously) but there we go. I think a lot of people will be buying this because they need to know, not because they want to know. Either way it’s a sale, which is sort of the point of a controversy like this isn’t it!
Jughead TPB Vol. 01
Archie Comics: By: Chip Zdarsky, Erica Henderson
Ah Jughead. Not much else to say except that this is a must purchase trade as far as I’m concerned, and volume two will be as well when that comes out, as that’ll be Ryan North! As it is, this series by Chip Zdarsky and Erica Henderson has been fantastic. Definitely worth your time.
Jupiters Legacy Vol 2 #1
Image: June 29, 2016 Writer: Mark Millar Art: Frank Quitely Cover: Frank Quitely
I’ll level with you: I’ve not read a single word of Mark Millar’s ‘Jupiter’ series. I’ve heard good things, and Frank Quitely is one of my all time favourite artists, so I need to pick up the previous two trades (Jupiter’s Circle volume 1 is also out this week), but if you’re already a fan you’re not going to want to miss this.
IDW: June 29, 2016 Writer: Cullen Bunn Art: David Baldeon Cover: J. H. Williams
Who else is loving Micronauts?! I have to admit, the first issue blew me away so much that issue 2 wasn’t as good, but I’m definitely going wherever this book is leading me. I mean who doesn’t love a good nostalgic franchise book? Speaking of which…
Transformers Vs G.I. Joe #13
IDW: June 22, 2016 Writer: John Barber Art: Tom Scioli Cover: Tom Scioli
I’VE NOT READ A SINGLE ISSUE OF THIS. I’ve been waiting for this exact moment, I’ve been waiting for the seires to end (morbid I know) so that I can read it all in one go. I’ll admit for some reason I thought it was only 5 issues, 6 max, so the fact that it’s had over a dozen means I’ve held out for way longer than I thought. Now though…now is my GLORIOUS TIME TO STRIKE HAHAHAHAHAAHDHIHEAGFEOAIGV.
Sorry…sorry I’m sorry. I have no idea what cam over me. I just watched the Game of Thrones finale and i’m still SUPER HYPED DID YOU SEE IT!?
Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #9
Marvel: June 29, 2016 Writer: Ryan North Art: Erica Henderson Cover: Erica Henderson
Awesome Cover The Fourth! I have a real affection for Mole Man. I think it’s because some of my earliest Marvel issues involve him in some way. I also think he’s sort of the perfect villain for Doreen Green? I mean, she’s got such an adorable way of finding the humanity in even the fiercest of villains, and Mole Man is always a comedy punchline even in serious books, so there’s undoubtedly a goldmine of story possibilities in bringing them together.
Vision TPB Vol. 01 Little Worse Than Man
By: Tom King, Gabriel Herndez Walta, Mike Del Mundo
If you’re not reading Vision already then I don’t know what to say that will make you pick it up. OOH. If you pick it up I’ll send you a PUPPY! I will, honest*!! No Catch**!!!! And while you’re loving your brand new puppy*** you can read volume one of the AMAZING, haunting, claustrophobic Vision.
X-O Manowar #47
Valiant: June 29, 2016 Writer: Robert Venditti Art: Joe Bennett Cover: Jeff Lemire
Awesome Cover The Fifth! This is a brand new jumping on point in the Countdown to #50! A massive milestone for Valiant’s flagship book, I can’t wait to get my hands on this and read the ever-loving heck out of it. While that cover is awesome however, I’m going to be picking up this one –
Awesome Cover The Sixth! A Jeff Lemire variant cover – sweet! I love watching Valiant go from strength to strength, and I can’t wait to read the start of the run up to what I’m sure will be their biggest ever issue.
Best of the Rest
Jem And The Holograms #16 concludes the Dark Jem storyline this week; Transformers Sins Of The Wreckers #5 (Of 5) ends the mini-series, will any of the Wreckers survive? Captain Marvel #6 promises to show he events of Civil War II #1 from Carol’s perspective; Mockingbird #4 guest stars Hawkeye; Spider-Man Deadpool #6 seems to be getting even more meta as Deadpool visits the set of his own movie (written by The Big Bang Theory writer Scott Aukerman); Ultimates Omniversal Volume 1 is out! Find out why I’ve been harping on about how awesome this series is for all these months!
I mean that episode was EPIC. It just doesn’t get any better than that does it?! And that ENDING MAN WOOOOO HOOOOOO!
OH. Oh sorry. I was….I was talking about Game of Thrones again.
The comics though? A pretty solid week actually. There’s a lack of DC Rebirth books which has made my pull feel a little light compared to previous weeks, but there’s still lots to enjoy.
Next Week’s Forecast
Well. The Modern Stone-age Family gets a little more modern next week as Flintstones #1 comes out from DC… joining it will be Future Quest #2, as well as a whole raft of second issues, with Superman #2, Green Lanterns #2, Green Arrow #2, Aquaman #2 and Batman #2. Paper Girls #7 brings yet more surprises I’m sure; Marvel has some great issues coming out, with Punisher #3, Han Solo #2, Poe Dameron #4, Silver Surfer #5, Moon Knight #4 and Vote Loki #2; and Shadowman returns to the Valiant universe with 4001A.D. Shadowman #1.
That was The Weekly Comic Book Forecast – June 29th 2016!
Until next time,

*Puppy may not exist
**Apart from the fact that it’s a puppy made of dreams and good wishes, and nothing tangible
***Again, it’s a fictitious puppy, but it’s as real as you want it to be? Unless you want it to actually be like really real then nope.
